Polymer Laboratories (PL), now a part of Varian, Inc., was founded in 1976 from the Polymer Research Group at Loughborough University in the UK.
At its inception, the company's objectives were "to develop techniques and instrumentation for the characterization of polymer systems and to develop high technology polymer products for application in the fields of chromatography, diagnostics and pharmaceuticals." Since 1976, Polymer Laboratories has continued to pursue these goals, with a consistent desire to develop these technologies.
PL is recognized as a manufacturer of the highest quality products for polymer characterization, including GPC/SEC columns and calibrants; software and instrumentation; columns and media for robust, reliable HPLC from micro and analytical to preparative/process; evaporative light scattering detectors for HPLC; particle size distribution analysis; online polymerization monitoring, resins for solid and solution phase synthesis; solid phase extraction for the removal of metal species from organic solutions; biomagnetic separation technology; microparticles for clinical diagnostics; and polymers for therapeutic and specialist applications.
The company's manufacturing is based in purpose-built premises in Church Stretton, Shropshire, UK. A major expansion program to invest in additional plant, premises, and people resulted in the completion of a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in 2001, which has dramatically increased PL's production capacity.
Our North American customer support office is based in Amherst, MA, to provide you with excellent sales, customer support, and service.
In November 2005, Polymer Laboratories was acquired by Varian, Inc. in a strategic move to provide benefits across all PL's product lines, to allow us to maximize growth across the broad spectrum of technologies within PL. Polymer Laboratories is delighted to have become part of Varian, and we will continue to bring you leading edge, reliable, state-of-the-art products for both routine and challenging applications, with the added benefit of Varian's support and infrastructure.
Congratulations to LCGC on their 25th anniversary.

Best of the Week: Food Analysis, Chemical Migration in Plastic Bottles, STEM Researcher of the Year
December 20th 2024Top articles published this week include the launch of our “From Lab to Table” content series, a Q&A interview about using liquid chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC–HRMS) to assess chemical hazards in plastic bottles, and a piece recognizing Brett Paull for being named Tasmanian STEM Researcher of the Year.
Using LC-MS/MS to Measure Testosterone in Dried Blood Spots
December 19th 2024Testosterone measurements are typically performed using serum or plasma, but this presents several logistical challenges, especially for sample collection, storage, and transport. In a recently published article, Yehudah Gruenstein of the University of Miami explored key insights gained from dried blood spot assay validation for testosterone measurement.
Determination of Pharmaceuticals by Capillary HPLC-MS/MS (Dec 2024)
December 19th 2024This application note demonstrates the use of a compact portable capillary liquid chromatograph, the Axcend Focus LC, coupled to an Agilent Ultivo triple quadrupole mass spectrometer for quantitative analysis of pharmaceutical drugs in model aqueous samples.
