Dr. Dieter Jaenchen founded CAMAG in 1961 near Basel, Switzerland, the heart of the European Pharmaceutical Industry. From humble beginnings of selling aluminum oxide and other chemicals, Dr. Jaenchen moved the company toward instrument development which progressed to a specialty in thin-layer chromatography (TLC), more specifically Instrumental TLC.
I was hired as General Manager of CAMAG Scientific, Inc. in March of 1988. Dr. Jaenchen left Pittcon in New Orleans and stopped by Wilmington, North Carolina to interview me and charged me with the task of preaching the gospel of TLC in America where it had not taken hold as it had in Europe and other places. As general manager, I was also the head of sales and marketing, the sales manager, and whatever else needed to be done. Here's where LCGCNorth America comes in! With the help of a North Carolina ad agency, we put together a set of four full page/four color ads. They were fantastic! I placed the first of these ads with LCGC in November of 1988. Had I known then as I do now with this anniversary publicity that LCGC had only been around just six years, I probably would not have invested so much of my small budget in the journal. However, nineteen years later, I still believe in the publication. I am still trying to preach the TLC gospel. Still TLC has not taken hold as it has in Europe and now fantastically more so in China and India. But, and it's a big "but" and deserves noting, TLC is known in America and is still being used when it is the best analytical option for a given task. Our company is known in America and appreciated for providing a quality product and great service. We claim to be the world leader in modern thin-layer chromatography, and we are generally recognized as having lived up to that billing. We are known, attested to by the fact that people find us and contact us every day. I think LCGC has contributed to that fact. Happy Anniversary LCGC!

Using LC-MS/MS to Measure Testosterone in Dried Blood Spots
December 19th 2024Testosterone measurements are typically performed using serum or plasma, but this presents several logistical challenges, especially for sample collection, storage, and transport. In a recently published article, Yehudah Gruenstein of the University of Miami explored key insights gained from dried blood spot assay validation for testosterone measurement.
Determination of Pharmaceuticals by Capillary HPLC-MS/MS (Dec 2024)
December 19th 2024This application note demonstrates the use of a compact portable capillary liquid chromatograph, the Axcend Focus LC, coupled to an Agilent Ultivo triple quadrupole mass spectrometer for quantitative analysis of pharmaceutical drugs in model aqueous samples.
