The ACS Analytical Division Satinder Ahuja Award for Young Investigators in Separation Science will be presented to James Grinias on April 11 at 1:00 pm EDT at an awards session taking place virtually at Pittcon 2022. Grinias is an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at Rowan University (Glassboro, New Jersey). The award recognizes and encourages outstanding contributions to the field of separation science by a young chemist or chemical engineer from academia, industry, or national laboratories.
Grinias’s research interests are focused on liquid-phase separations, especially the fundamentals of column and instrument design in liquid chromatography (LC). With his research group at Rowan, Grinias has published 22 papers about instrument design and miniaturization, superficially porous particles (SPPs), and fast LC. He has published 32 papers with 607 citations on Google Scholar, an h-index of 12, and an i10 index of 14. He has also presented more than 80 oral and poster presentations at scientific conferences.
During the session, Grinias will present a talk titled “Chromatographic Approaches to Measuring Pharmaceutical and Biological Compounds.” He will explore how a variety of advances in LC columns and instrumentation have enabled improved capabilities for measuring pharmaceutical and biological analytes in a broad array of sample types.

Grinias is also the 2022 recipient of the LCGC Emerging Leader in Chromatography Award, and will receive that award on March 28.
Modern HPLC Strategies: Improving Retention and Peak Shape for Basic Analytes
August 16th 2024In high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), it is common for bases and unreacted ionized silanols on silica-based columns to cause irreproducible retention, broad peaks, and peak tailing when working with basic analytes. David S. Bell, Lead Consultant at ASKkPrime LLC offers innovative HPLC strategies that can help mitigate such issues.
Unstoppable analysis of pesticides residues in black tea
September 26th 2024In this study, the suitability of the TSQ 9610 triple quadrupole GC-MS/MS system was assessed for the analysis of more than 200 pesticides in black tea at trace concentrations supplemented with SPE cleanup. The linearity, accuracy, precision, limit of quantitation, and injection reproducibility of 20 selected analytes representative of the different pesticide classes in black tea matrix are demonstrated.
Quantitative analysis of environmental contaminants using Orbitrap Exploris GC
September 26th 2024The benefits of the Thermo Scientific™ Orbitrap Exploris™ GC mass spectrometer system for the analysis of trace level contaminants, such as pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are showcased.
