The 6th International Symposium on Recent Advances in Food Analysis (RAFA 2013) will take place at the Clarion Congress Hotel, Prague, Czech Republic, from 5–8 November 2013. The RAFA 2013 symposium will focus on advanced analytical and bioanalytical technologies and food analysis applications related to food authenticity, food security, food quality and safety, and food integrity.
Cutting-edge technologies represent an important tool in supporting the integrity of the global food market, both present and future. Despite legislative efforts, food scandals occur on occasion, caused by contamination with pesticide residues, veterinary drug residues, endocrine disruptors, processing contaminants, and migrants from contact materials or natural sources (including mycotoxins and marine toxins). Moreover, the introduction of genetically modified foods and ingredients to food production has increased the demand for stringent analysis methods. Strict regulations and consumer expectations have forced analytical chemists in the food industry to lower quantification limits, improve quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC), and increase sample throughput by introducing new approaches and highly innovative technologies and strategies.
Presentations will be given by leading scientists through keynote lectures and contributed oral and poster presentations. The following areas will be covered:
The conference programme will be accompanied by several satellite events:
An exhibition of the most recently introduced instrumentation in food analysis and other valuable equipment will be available during the symposium. Vendor seminars will also be organized to introduce recent developments and scientific strategies for advanced food quality and safety control.
Young scientists are encouraged to present their scientific work, with a number of RAFA 2013 Student Travel Grants available. The prestigious RAFA Poster Award will also be given for the best poster presentation by a young scientist, along with other sponsored poster awards.

Analytical Challenges in Measuring Migration from Food Contact Materials
November 2nd 2015Food contact materials contain low molecular weight additives and processing aids which can migrate into foods leading to trace levels of contamination. Food safety is ensured through regulations, comprising compositional controls and migration limits, which present a significant analytical challenge to the food industry to ensure compliance and demonstrate due diligence. Of the various analytical approaches, LC-MS/MS has proved to be an essential tool in monitoring migration of target compounds into foods, and more sophisticated approaches such as LC-high resolution MS (Orbitrap) are being increasingly used for untargeted analysis to monitor non-intentionally added substances. This podcast will provide an overview to this area, illustrated with various applications showing current approaches being employed.
