From June 12–13, 2025, the 3rd Advances in Separation Science Workshop will take take place in Gembloux, Belgium.
The Advances in Separation Science Workshop first took place in September 2022, in Gembloux, Belgium, hosted by the University of Liège at the Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech faculty. Initiated by Professors Giorgia Purcaro (University of Liège, Belgium) and Janusz Pawliszyn (University of Waterloo, Canada), the inaugural event attracted over 70 attendees. It was organized again the following year and reached ~120 attendees from across Europe.

Given the success of the first two editions, the workshop has become a biennial event. In 2025, it will be organized in conjunction with the renowned HPLC conference. With the workshop venue located less than two hours from the HPLC event, attendees will have the opportunity to visit both conferences in a single trip. The 3rd Advances in Separation Science will take place on June 12–13, 2025, in Gembloux.
The workshop will bring together top experts from academia and industry to discuss the most recent advances in separation science, including sample preparation, chromatographic separation, detection systems, and chemometrics. The scientific program includes plenary lectures from prominent scientists, including Janusz Pawliszyn (University of Waterloo Canada), Hans-Gerd Janssen (Unilever Research Vlaardingen, Netherlands), Chiara Cordero (University of Turin, Italy), Erich Leitner (University of Gratz, Austria), Kevin Schug (University of Texas-Arlington, USA), Barbara Bojko (Nicolaus Copernicus University, Poland), Gérard Hopfgartner (University of Geneva, Switzerland), Peter Q. Tranchida (University of Messina, Italy), Emanuela Gionfriddo (University at Buffalo, USA), Pierluigi Delmonte (Food and Drug Administration, USA), Erwin Rosenberg (University of Vienna, Austria), and Hans Mol (Wageningen Food Safety Research, Netherlands).
The program will be completed by volunteer oral presentations and a rich poster session. Coffee breaks and a social event between the two days will create a welcoming environment for networking and fostering collaborations.
Several awards and travel grants will be available for young scientists presenting their work at the workshop.
This year, the workshop will feature two short courses organized in parallel on June 11, 2025, and led by experts in the field. One class will have a focus on gas chromatography (GC) and will be taught by Hans-Gerd Janssen and Jaap de Zeeuw, and the other will feature solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and will be led by Janusz Pawliszyn, Barbara Bojko, and Emanuela Gionfriddo.
A symbolic registration fee is required as a commitment for attending both the workshop and the courses. Online registration and abstract submission are required. The deadline for oral abstract submission is May 12, 2025, and the deadline for poster abstract submission is May 19.
We look forward to welcoming you to this historic environment and hope to drive scientific discussions and networking opportunities forward.
