Event Overview:
Guard columns are essential components in chromatographic systems, providing protection to the analytical column from matrix interference, instrument wear and tear, and mobile phase impurities. Their primary function is to extend the life of the analytical column, offering a cost-effective solution for customers by minimizing the need for frequent column replacements.
This presentation reviews various guard and inline filter options, highlighting the differences between inline guard columns and direct-connect guards. We will discuss the assembly processes for each type of guard, ensuring optimal performance and ease of use. Additionally, the testing procedures for guard columns will be covered, emphasizing their reliability in preventing contamination.
Key indicators of a guard column’s degradation will be explored, including performance drops and the appropriate timing for replacing ferrules or the entire guard system.
Finally, inert guards will be discussed, outlining their specific applications and advantages in maintaining sample integrity.

Who Should Attend:
Speaker:
Gary has twenty years of hands-on experience with chromatography including SPE, HPLC, and LC/MS instrumentation. He began his chromatography career in the laboratory as a bonding chemist and has served as a study director for PFAS analysis, specializing in both bioanalytical and environmental fields. His work in developing HPLC and LC/MS-MS applications has further broadened his expertise in chromatography. Since 2018, Gary has been a key member of Restek’s European-based technical support team, where he offers expert assistance to customers in overcoming complex analytical challenges.
