Chemical companies BASF and Mingyang announced a collaboration to develop advanced materials and technical solutions that cater to different industries’ sustainable needs. The partnership focuses on Power-to-X (P2X) materials and technologies, enhancing cooperation in technology and business sectors.
P2X refers to when conversion technologies turn electricity into carbon-neutral synthetic fuels, such as hydrogen, synthetic natural gas, or chemicals (2). This technique can unlock carbon-neutral solutions that mitigate emissions from industry. For example, this technology can capture concentrated carbon dioxide (CO2) streams from biomass-fired power plants or anaerobic digestion. As a part of this collaboration, BASF will provide research and development (R&D) expertise in catalytic materials and technologies, while Mingyang will apply its materials and technologies research capabilities to Power-to-X equipment. With this partnership, both companies hope to advance large-scale application of green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol in China.
This is just one of many ways scientists are exploring more sustainable approaches to chemistry. The goal of these developments is to address present-day needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own. According to the Society of Toxicology, designing and using sustainable chemicals is critical to health, not just throughout a chemical’s supply chain, but also on a worldwide scale (3). This corresponds with growth in the green chemistry market; starting at $100.9 billion USD in 2022, according to Market.us Media, the market grew to $122.3 billion in 2024 (4).

BASF, launched in 1885, has large production sites in Shanghai, Nanjing, Chongqing, and Zhanjiang, with a regional R&D hub in Shanghai (5). As an international chemical company, BASF operates in markets and countries with different requirements and conditions. The company provides ranges from standard electronic grades, up to the highest quality levels available in standard markets (6). Further, the laboratories work with their R&D teams to create new analytical methodologies for new products, with skill and specialization being key factors for analytical accuracy. BASF posted sales of approximately €8.6 billion in 2024 to customers in Greater China.
Founded in 1993, Mingyang says it is dedicated to innovation and industrial excellence, with strong commitments to making energy smarter, greener, and more inclusive. Mingyang specializes in researching, developing, and manufacturing energy equipment. Their capabilities cover clean energy generation, equipment development, and engineering services across different types of environmentally friendly energies.
Wang Jinfa, the executive dean of the Central Research Institute of Mingyang Group, said in a statement that the companies share a solid cooperative relationship.
“I believe that through this cooperation, both parties will leverage each other's strengths and jointly promote the implementation of large-scale application scenarios for green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol in China,” Jinfa said.
“By combining our strengths and expertise, we are confident in our ability to develop new solutions that deliver value to our customers and support them in achieving their sustainability objectives,” said Henry Paeckert, senior vice president, Business and Market Development Greater China, in BASF.
