In a January 27 press release, Waters Corporation announced its expansion of its MaxPeak Premier Reversed-Phase Column portfolio with MaxPeak Premier OBD Preparative Columns. The new columns were introduced at the 29th Symposium on the Interface of Regulatory and Analytical Sciences for Biotechnology Health Products (WCBP 2025) in Washington, DC. Taking place at the Mayflower Hotel from January 28–30, the conference mainly focuses on current and emerging chemistry, manufacturing, and controls (CMC) analytical technology within evolving domestic and international regulatory perspectives (1,2).

The XBridgeand XSelect Columns include Optimum Bed Density (OBD) packing technology and MaxPeak High Performance Surfaces (HPS) Column hardware. This technology allows for purification of small molecules, peptides, and oligonucleotides, while minimizing non-specific adsorption to metal surfaces that can compromise compound recovery and purity.

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) columns contain a stationary phase bonded to a support material to provide a large surface area. As a mobile phase moves a mixture through a column, stationary phase chemistry dictates the sample components’ affinity to stick or retain on the column. This leads to the sample traversing through the column and eluting at different rates (3). A sample’s physicochemical properties, stationary phase chemistry, mobile phase composition, flow rate, and column temperature can determine the rate at which components travel through a column. Further, researchers face different stationary phase chemistries and column dimensions, such as the length, inner diameter, and support particle sizes.

The MaxPeak Premier OBD Preparative Column line allows for predictable scale-up for the most challenging molecular targets. This family of columns offers full scalability to preparative dimensions (4) and minimize non-specific adsorption (NSA), allowing for precise detection of low-level compounds. The new columns added to this lineup feature 10 mm internal diameter and 50-, 100-, 150-, and 250-mm lengths.

The MaxPeak High Performance Surfaces (HPS) Technology, combined with column-refined manufacturing processes, improve peak symmetry without additives in the mobile phase or column pre-conditioning. The columns allow for predictable scale-up from analytical separations to milligram-scale purification to isolate compounds prone to non-specific adsorption.

Waters has manufactured analytical instruments and software, for chromatography, mass spectrometry, and thermal analysis for more than 65 years. The company serves experts in the life, materials, food, and environmental sciences industries. Employing approximately 7900 employees across 35 countries, the company works to supply over 100 countries with the latest in chromatographic technology (3).

This release continues Waters’ trend of releasing new technologies; on January 22, the company announced the launch of thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) Smart-Seal Pans from its TA Instruments Division. This self-opening sample container is designed to enable analysis of atmosphere-sensitive samples in laboratory benchtop-installed Discovery Series Thermogravimetric Analyzers (1).

The company will have its Q4 2024 financial results conference call, which will occur February 12, 2025, at 8 AM EST (6). At the 2025 J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, where Udit Batra, Waters President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), highlighted its contributions to regulated markets and its plans for the future (6).

“We spend a lot of time trying to understand the unmet needs of our customers and then spend roughly 10% of our product sales converting complex instruments into simplified instrument systems,” Batra said.
