Upfront Chromatography A/S (Copenhagen, Denmark) announced the development of a single-step process for the isolation of the protein alpha-lactalbumin from whey. The protein, which is naturally present in bovine and human milk, is used as a supplement in infant formulas. According to the company, the protein can be isolated using its expanded bed adsorption (EBA) columns. The process eliminates the need for heat treatment or clarification steps and enables preservation of the protein’s native structure. The columns reportedly operate at high flow rates with crude and unclarified feed stocks.
