This webinar addresses the challenge of non-specific adsorption in liquid chromatography, arising from the interactions of analytes with metal surfaces in LC instruments and columns. These issues, including peak tailing and loss of analyte signals, result from the adsorption of analytes on the metal oxide layer of the components. To combat this issue, Waters developed MaxPeak HPS, a disruptive surface modification technology applied to metal components in HPLC and UPLC instruments and columns.
The hybrid organic−inorganic surface, based on ethylene-bridged siloxane chemistry, significantly improves performance in reversed-phase and hydrophilic interaction (HILIC) chromatography, demonstrating enhanced separations for various small molecules as well as nucleotides, phosphopeptides, and oligonucleotides. The technology proves particularly advantageous in UHPLC/mass spectrometry investigations of metal-sensitive analytes, enabling higher efficiency and improved peak characteristics. This webinar provides background education on non-specific adsorption and its deleterious effects, introduces MaxPeak HPS surface technology and the family of products that leverage MaxPeak HPS technology.

Paula has over 17 years’ experience in LC and LC/MS applications and analytical chemistry. She began her career at Waters in the chemistry division, focusing on novel column chemistries for biopharmaceutical applications, and moved to instrument development over 12 years ago. During the past 12 years, Paula has focused on instrument development and understanding the impact of instrument characteristics on method migration and method transfer. Professor Bogusław Buszewski of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland, has been awarded the prestigious Martin Medal, and the 2025 Silver Jubilee Medal has been awarded to Elia Psillakis of the Technical University of Crete in Greece.
