Shimadzu Product Profile
Nexera - a true all-round UHPLC
UHPLC systems represent the state-of-the-art in liquid chromatography instrumentation. Beside enhancements necessary to operate with sub 2-µm particle columns, they differ from each other through their versatility in handling various applications on the same instrument without any changes.
Shimadzu’s LC-30A Nexera is unsurpassed in high-speed and high-resolution analysis and productivity. It is designed to meet the needs of the most demanding markets such as pharmaceutical and the food industry.
Nexera pumps offer a flow range from 0.0001 ml/min up to 3 ml/min with 130 MPa pressure from 3.0001 ml/min up to 5 ml/min with 80 MPa pressure and up to 10ml/min at 22 MPa. The system enable the use of longer columns for covering fast LC with high flow rates, high resolution and short columns as well as the use of semi-preparative columns. Nexera UHPLC can operate in binary and ternary high pressure gradient configurations and in quarternary gradient mode, the last of which also allows solvent blending in any concentration ratio needed.
The micro-reactor based mixers support a small system volume and very short gradient delays. Nexera’s autosampler provides almost zero carryover compared to the previous instruments by keeping the principle of direct injection with isolated metering system and using up to 3 rinse solvents, while offering various rinsing modes and applying several design changes at needle and needle seal. To increase throughput, overlapping pre-treatment can be used, the pre-treatment capabilities expanding the application range.
The control unit contains a modified software in order to control the new modules and functionalities, e.g. the autosampler.
Nexera fits well with the 100 Hz detectors of the LC-20A prominence series: UV, PDA, RF as well as with the LCMS-2020 and LCMS-TQ-8030.
LC-30A Nexera can be used from semi-micro, conventional, UHPLC up to semi-preparative methods without changes on the flowline. It fulfils the demands of an all-round LC system with high reliability and robustness.

The Complexity of Oligonucleotide Separations
January 9th 2025Peter Pellegrinelli, Applications Specialist at Advanced Materials Technology (AMT) explains the complexity of oligonucleotide separations due to the unique chemical properties of these molecules. Issues such as varying length, sequence complexity, and hydrophilic-hydrophobic characteristics make efficient separations difficult. Separation scientists are addressing these challenges by modifying mobile phase compositions, using varying ion-pairing reagents, and exploring alternative separation modes like HILIC and ion-exchange chromatography. Due to these complexities, AMT has introduced the HALO® OLIGO column, which offers high-resolution, fast separations through its innovative Fused-Core® technology and high pH stability. Alongside explaining the new column, Peter looks to the future of these separations and what is next to come.
Metabolomics Analysis of Low Birth-Weight Infants Using UHPLC-MS/MS Following Lipid Emulsion
January 10th 2025A recent study aimed to directly compare the changes in serum metabolites among very low birth-rate (VLBW) infants following the administration of the soybean oil-based lipid emulsion and soybean oil, medium-chain triglycerides, olive oil, and fish oil (SMOF) lipid emulsion using untargeted metabolomics techniques.
Analyzing New Drug Modalities: An ISC 2024 Interview with Kelly Zhang
January 10th 2025At ISC 2024 in Liverpool, United Kingdom, LCGC International interviewed Kelly Zhang of Genentech about her work analyzing new drug modalities, such as mRNA, oligonucleotides, peptides, and cell and gene therapies.
