LCGC spoke with Dr. Elisabeth Bik, PhD, of Harbers Bik LLC about the greater challenge of preventing scientific and research misconduct in scientific publishing. This segment is the first part of a six-part interview with Bik.

Bik spoke at the 2022 Eastern Analytical Symposium in Plainsboro, New Jersey, where she delivered the Breakfast Lecture titled “The Dark Side of Science: Misconduct in Research.”

Bik is a microbiologist and scientific integrity consultant. She is best known for her work detecting photo manipulation in scientific publications. She is the founder of Microbiome Digest, a blog that provides daily updates on microbiome research, and the Science Integrity Digest blog. She was awarded the 2021 John Maddox Prize for her outstanding work in exposing widespread threats to research integrity in scientific publishing.

LCGC sat down with Bik to discuss her research and findings. In the first part of this six-part interview series, “Misconduct in Research,” Bik discusses the common indicators of falsified results that researchers should keep an eye out for.
