During the 34th International Symposium on Chromatography, which takes place from October 6–10, 2024 in Liverpool, UK, various scientists are honored for their contributions to the analytical chemistry community. This year, LCGC International was honored to present Amarande Murisier our Rising Stars of Separation Science Award for Outstanding Achievement in Biopharmaceutical Analysis, sponsored by Agilent Technologies.
Amarande Murisier obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Geneva in 2022. Her research focuses on improving liquid chromatographic (LC) methods, which are essential tools for separating, identifying, and quantifying complex biological molecules. Specifically, her work aimed at working to techniques such as size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and ion exchange chromatography (IEC), improving efficiency by coupling with mass spectrometry (MS) for precise protein characterization.
She also made a major contribution to pioneering work in developing ultra short columns for biopharmaceutical analysis. In 2023, she joined the clinical pharmacology group at the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland (CHUV), developing, among other things, techniques for quantifying antibodies in the patient’s blood. Since September, she serves as an Analytical Lab Manager at Merck, in charge of a team of scientists and technicians dedicated to method development and routine assay analysis to support early-phase pipeline. Murisier has published several fundamental papers on separation techniques for biopharmaceuticals, as well as application-oriented articles.
As part of our conference coverage, we sat down with Murisier to learn more about her background and what drives her interest in analytical chemistry.
In this interview, we asked the following questions:

SPE-Based Method for Detecting Harmful Textile Residues
January 14th 2025University of Valencia scientists recently developed a method using solid-phase extraction (SPE) followed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC–HRMS/MS) for detecting microplastics and other harmful substances in textiles.
PFAS Analysis in Practice: A RAFA 2024 Interview with Stefan van Leuwen
January 10th 2025At the Recent Advances in Food Analysis (RAFA) conference in 2024, LCGC International sat down with Stefan van Leuwen of Wageningen Food Safety Research to discuss his research, which addresses emerging challenges in circular food production, focusing on the risks posed by pollutants when waste and by-products are repurposed in food systems.
