This week, LCGC International published a variety of articles on the hottest topics in chromatography and beyond. Below, we’ve highlighted some of the most popular articles, according to our readers. Happy reading!
Inside the Laboratory: The McLean Group at Vanderbilt University
Aaron Acevedo
John McLean is the leader of the dean of graduate education and research at the College of Arts & Science in Vanderbilt University. He also leads the McLean Laboratory in Vanderbilt University, which has recently been looking into the development of mass spectrometry technologies via ion mobility–mass spectroscopy (IM–MS). In this edition of “Inside the Laboratory,” McLean discusses the origins of his laboratory group, what made them focus on IM–MS, and what the team will be working on in the future.
Enhancing Omics Research with Advanced LC–MS/MS Techniques
Will Wetzel
Lipidomics involves studying cellular lipids on a large scale, usually with MS tools and methodologies. Meanwhile, metabolomics is the study of metabolites, which are small molecules within the cells and tissues of living organisms. Metabolomics is rapidly growing a presence in the biomedical space thanks to MS instrumentation advances, and since MS is essential for advancingomics research, researchers are looking for ways to improve current MS technologies. In a recent study out of the University of Lyon in Lyon, France, lead author Sophie Ayciriex and her team showed the potential of combining data-independent acquisition (DIA) and advanced MS techniques for revolutioninzing omics research.
Green Chemistry Top of Mind at Analytica
Caroline Hroncich
During Analytica 2024, one of the most common topics discussed was sustainability. The conference, which boasts itself as the “meeting placing for the Green Lab” brought together more than 1,000 exhibitors from around the world, most of which presented new products and services that claimed to be greener solutions for customers. In this article, we discuss the rise of green chemistry and why it has become such an important topic in the analytical science community.
Inside the Laboratory: The Chromatography Laboratory at the University of Rouen
Will Wetzel
The Chromatography Laboratory at the University of Rouen focuses on the miniaturization of chromatographic systems. The laboratory focuses on developing new stationary phases and miniaturized columns for gas chromatography (GC). In a recent “Inside the Laboratory" segment, LCGC International sat down with lead investigator Pascal Cardinael and lecturer Valérie Agasse to discuss their research group and their recent research projects.
Analytica 2024: An Interview with Michael Lämmerhofer
Caroline Hroncich, Aaron Acevedo
Michael Lämmerhofer is a full professor (W3) for pharmaceutical (bio-)analysis at the University of Tübingen, Germany.H earned his PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Graz, Austria. He was coworker of Professor W. Lindner (University of Vienna, Austria) until 2011 and from 1999 to 2000 he was post-doc at the Department of Chemistry of the University of California, Berkeley, USA, with Prof Frantisek Svec. His research interests include the development of functionalized separation materials (chiral stationary phases, mixed‑mode phases, chemo- and bioaffinity materials, nanoparticles, monoliths), metabolomics and lipidomics, pharmaceutical analysis (impurity profiling, enantioselective analytics), multidimensional separations, and biopharmaceuticals analysis. During Analytica 2024, we interviewed Lämmerhofer about his conference presentation and how chiral stationary phases (CSPs) can be used in analytical chemistry.
Inside the Laboratory: The Richardson Group at the University of South Carolina
November 20th 2024In this edition of “Inside the Laboratory,” Susan Richardson of the University of South Carolina discusses her laboratory’s work with using electron ionization and chemical ionization with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) to detect DBPs in complex environmental matrices, and how her work advances environmental analysis.
RAFA 2024 Highlights: Cutting-Edge Chromatography Techniques for Food Safety and Food Analysis
November 18th 2024An illuminating session focusing on progress in analytical techniques used in food analysis took place on Wednesday 6 November 2024 at RAFA 2024 in Prague, The Czech Republic, including a talk on the analysis of 1000 toxins in 10 minutes.
RAFA 2024 Highlights: Contemporary Food Contamination Analysis Using Chromatography
November 18th 2024A series of lectures focusing on emerging analytical techniques used to analyse food contamination took place on Wednesday 6 November 2024 at RAFA 2024 in Prague, Czech Republic. The session included new approaches for analysing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), polychlorinated alkanes (PCAS), Mineral Oil Hydrocarbons (MOH), and short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs).
