During ASMS 2024, which will take place June 2–6, 2024 in Anaheim, California, many scientists are set to present research on the latest advances in mass spectrometry. Recently, LCGC International sat down with Kristina Hakansson of the University of Michigan to discuss her presentation, "From Radical to Mainstream: Ion-Electron Reactions for Biomolecular Structural Analysis."

Kristina Hakansson is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Michigan (1). She received her PhD at Uppsala University in Sweden. Her team's research efforts include applying state-of-the-art mass spectrometric techniques to different areas, electron capture dissociation (ECD), and hydrogen/deuterium exchange (HDX).

In the following interview, Hakansson answers the following questions:

  • What can you tell us about your upcoming presentation at ASMS?
  • Why does top-down electrospray ionization–mass spectrometry analysis require high resolution?
  • What is the relationship between top-down electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry analysis and tandem mass spectrometry regarding this type of analysis?
  • How can fragmentation stemming from the operating conditions in top-down electron capture dissociation be addressed?
  • Were there any unexpected discoveries that were made during this experiment?
  • What is the next step in your research?
  • What are you most looking forward to at this year’s ASMS conference?
